Peter reminds families that scholarship planning should begin early. For some opportunities, the first step is at the student's own high school: ask who handles nominations, how candidates are selected and when the internal deadline falls.

One nominee per school each year

The University of Toronto's Pearson Scholarship requires a high-school nomination, with one nominee per school per year. Nomination, university admission and the scholarship application are separate steps.

Plan around three separate deadlines

For September 2027 entry, the school nomination deadline is October 9, 2026; the university admission application deadline for Pearson consideration is October 16; and the scholarship application and supporting documents are due November 6. These are not the general deadlines for every University of Toronto applicant. Internal school deadlines may be earlier.

Check eligibility first

The current official guidance requires applicants to be international students who are not Canadian and need a study permit, in their final year of secondary school in 2026/27 or graduated no earlier than June 2026, and starting at Toronto in September 2027. Students already in post-secondary education, or starting post-secondary study in January 2027, are not eligible.

Peter suggests meeting the school counsellor to confirm the nomination process. Families should also consider affordable options without a scholarship and prepare a workable backup plan.
