Western Australia is commissioning a business case on a possible merger of Curtin University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia. Work is scheduled to start in late 2026 and finish in 2027, before a final government decision. The universities have not merged.
Position of the Government and universities
The government will examine costs, financial sustainability, research capacity and the student experience, advised by a 12-member steering committee. Curtin publicly opposed a forced merger on 11 October, citing costs, disruption and reduced choice. Independent reporting by The PIE presents both positions.
What should the Taiwan applicants see?
The government FAQ says the business case does not affect existing degrees or courses, which continue as normal. Unannounced arrangements should not be treated as changes to university names, degree certificates or admission conditions.
Editorial guidance: use the individual university’s formal offer when applying or paying fees. Keep dated copies of course, campus and tuition information and monitor the 2027 assessment.
