The University of Western Australia (UWA) confirms that its Mumbai campus received a Letter of Approval from India’s University Grants Commission (UGC), with an opening date of 18 September 2026. Independent interviews reported by The PIE News on 22 September confirmed that the campus had opened.

Background and main changes

This is a new example of an Australian university delivering transnational higher education through an Indian campus. The place of study and degree-awarding institution may be in different countries, so students should examine both the programme and local requirements.

Key numbers and state

UWA’s vice-chancellor told The PIE News that the university hopes to enrol a combined 100–200 students in Mumbai and Chennai by year-end. This is an expectation, not a verified enrolment count.

At the time of this check, UWA’s official website still stated that Chennai approval was progressing. The independent interview also reported that approval had not yet been received when the interview took place. Mumbai’s approval cannot be applied to Chennai, and a planned opening date is not an established fact.

Implications for Taiwanese students and families

Editorial analysis: When comparing overseas branch campuses, request written information on eligibility for your nationality and intake, fees, campus approval and teaching arrangements. Exchanges and subsequent study in Australia are separate application pathways; they do not automatically provide an Australian visa, work rights or employment. The opening announcement alone does not establish eligibility for applicants from Taiwan.
