On 5 October 2026, the University of Toronto announced the Presidents’ Impact Scholarship, a CAD 100 million interdisciplinary doctoral initiative funded by an anonymous CAD 50 million donation and matching university funds. Its first cohort is expected in September 2027.

Funding and research design

The university plans to recruit at least 12 scholars annually, each receiving CAD 80,000 a year for four years. Two supervisors from different disciplines will guide each student, alongside experiential learning with external organisations. Research themes will be set annually.

The Canadian Press distinguishes the roughly 12–13 annual entrants from approximately 50 scholars enrolled once the programme reaches full capacity. These figures refer to different time frames, not 50 new places each year.

What prospective applicants in Taiwan can do now

This is a programme announcement, not an open scholarship call. The university says application information will follow. Deadlines, nationality eligibility and coverage of individual PhD fields should not be assumed.

Editorial guidance: map your research question, the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and potential supervisory expertise. Check eligibility and covered expenses when the formal call appears. Preparation should start with a concrete research problem, not the award amount alone.
