Florida State University (FSU) bulletin, from 2026-2027 academic year As a matter of principle, international students with F-1, J-1, F-2 or J-2 status will automatically join FSU Standard Health Insurance Plan, and the exemptions that were previously available from other insurance policies have been significantly reduced.

Rules and exceptions

FSU states that limited exemptions mainly relate to specific government or institutional sponsorships, as well as to a few cases where the conditions specified by the school are met. Students should not purchase their own external insurance policies before assuming that they will replace the school programme.

The system of public universities in Florida is already required for international students to prove sufficient to cover school fees, living expenses and health insurance and to maintain standard insurance coverage. This time, the FSU is going to focus more on the way it works in school.

Impact on students in Taiwan

Students in Taiwan who are about to arrive at FSU should incorporate the school premium into the total cost and check their visa status, date of receipt and whether they meet the exception before paying their contributions. The summer 2026 programme listed by the school has shown a specific period of costs, but no school year and annual amounts will change, and this paper does not extrapolate future costs to the old rates.

If there is an insurance or exchange/sponsorship programme in place in Taiwan, the certificate must still be submitted to the FSU to determine that the exemption cannot be determined by the name of the policy or by the overseas medical provisions alone.
