Background and date of verification

The report Fraud's guide for university students on fraud prevention was published on 19 July 2026 and updated on 10 September. This is a review of 26 September and is not a new law or a newly published case count.

Make sure you pay for school fees and rentals.

The guide reminds students of the discounts for false tuition fees, fraudulent immigration officers to collect contributions and false rental housing. If a suspicious contact is received, the contact is suspended and verified by means of an official means of contact that is freely available; Before paying school fees or a rental deposit, you can ask for help from the relevant university establishment.

The UKCISA Independent Student Consultation Guidelines document cases of fraudulent Home Office, threats of payment through repatriation or visa cancellation. It is not sufficient for the other party to know some of the personal data or to provide a seemingly official callback number to prove identity.

Exception: Mere due reminder may be a genuine notice

Nor can all visa expiration reminders be considered fraud: UKCISA indicates that an official notice that is due and does not require a response may be genuine. The focus of the judgement was on whether to press for payment, to request information, and whether it could be confirmed through an independent official channel.

Implications for Taiwanese students and families

The editor's proposal to families in Taiwan is that the official contact between the School's International Student Office and the bank be secured prior to leaving the country and that an agreement be made to confirm each other's requests for emergency remittances. Do not deal alone with payment instructions for strangers out of fear of affecting their studies.
