The reference date is the end of June

Japan’s Immigration Services Agency reports 479,626 residents with Student status at the end of June 2026, an increase of 14,842 from the end of 2025. Kyodo’s 16 October report, carried by Qazinform, gives the same total. The publication date is later than the reference date; this is not an October live count.

Residence status differs from university enrolment

The total foreign-resident population was 4,281,026, up 3.8% over six months. Student status is an immigration classification. It is not directly comparable with admissions series using different institutions, dates or qualification levels, and the increase cannot be attributed to Taiwanese students. These numbers alone do not establish relaxed visa rules or easier admission.

Checks for Taiwanese applicants

Editorial guidance: check recognition, teaching language, fees and entry requirements before reviewing current admission and residence procedures. Use population trends as context; choose a programme according to its curriculum, support services and your finances.
