"Game Design" is not a single route. It is easier for students to find a course suitable for themselves than to follow a comprehensive ranking when they break the target into play and level, program and technology, art and animation, narratives and UX, production and ad hoc management.
One, divided into five directions.
II. Examples of courses in four countries, with different priorities
Canada Sheridan: Cross-cutting Game Design+Co-op
Honours Bachelor of Game Design places design, narrative, programming and art in the same four-year degree. Foundations of Game Design, Narrative Skills, Programing for Game Designers and including industry Co-op work term; The senior grades focus on team-making games. Such courses are suitable for students who want to be designers but who want to understand the full production process.
British ⁇ Staffordshire: Design and Games Art can be more closely divided
(a) The Computer Games Design BSc of Staffordshire emphasizes the creative and technical aspects of game production, as well as industry connections and specialized facilities; Another independent Games Art BA places more weight on 3D mobile, digital sculpting, texturing, character signature and professional work. This example reminds students that the English selection cannot be based on the word "Games" only, depending on whether it's désign or art.
US ⁇ RIT: Game Design and Development technology integration
RIT uses the name "Game Design and Development" as BS, and the course orientation is linked to the background of its Company College. For students wishing to combine game development with programming and interactive techniques, this course will have a very different learning experience from purely artistic Games Art.
Australian RMIT: Design story and interactive media orientation
RMIT ' s Bachelor of Games emphasizes the same standard practice, industry connectivity and design training; Co-editor Digital Design also covers 3D assets, games engines, immersive / extended reality. If students are interested in reaching out to interactive media, XR or digital environments, there is no need to limit the search to a degree in the name of "Game Design".
iii. The selection of a school should not be limited to a "ranked list"
A more practical comparative table should contain at least six columns: core course, program weight, art weight, team project, internship/Co-op, graduate work. If the application requires a collection of works, add the portfolio format and review mode; If you're not technical, look at high school mathematics or other prerequisites.
IV. DIY methodology for high school students
- Write down the work you want to do: designer, programmer, artist, nimator, UX, narrative or producer.
- To attend the official university course pages, at least the compulsory first grade and the upper grade, not just the first page of the intake.
- Search for "capstone / final project / student work" to confirm what actually happened when the students graduated.
- To confirm whether internships are compulsory, optional or only career service; The three have different meanings.
- The final comparison is made between location, cost, ranking and conditions of application.
