Earth science research on rocks, crust, within the Earth, surface processes and planetary systems. It is not a single department, but a cluster of areas from Geology to Geophysics, Environmental Gender, and Planetary Science.

I. Geology Geology

The focus is on rocks, minerals, layers, tectonics, volcanoes, sediments, antiquated organisms and field geology. Imperial's Geology BSc also adds programming, remote sensing and geophysics.

II. Geophysics Geophysics

Using Physics, Maths, data and sensing methods to study underground structures, earthquakes, resources and the Earth's interior.

III. Planetary Science

Extend geology/geophysics to plaints, moons, asteroids and Solar System. Imperial’s Earth and Planetary Science also combines pysics, chemistry, mothmatics, engineering and campaigning.

For what students?

V. Difference with GIS / Geography

GIS / Geography focuses more frequently on spatial information, human relations, urban and environmental analysis; Earth Science favours Earth matter, physics and geological processes.

VI. FUNCTIONS

Geoscience, environmental reporting, energy, Mining, Hazards, remote sensing, government, research and planning science.
