The value of Co-op is not just a résumé, but the formal embedding of supervised working periods into a degree. Different schools, different faculty, have different ways of joining.

I. Maximum difference between Co-op and general intership

Waterloo and UBC official notes both define Co-op as a structured work-integraded learning: students alternate between academic terms and work terms, with recruitment, supervision, learning objectives and evaluation. UBC is more explicit in requiring its Co-op work terms to be full-time, paid and minimum hours.

If you don't get into college, you'll get Co-op.

Some programs are directly enrolled in Co-op stream, while others apply after school. UBC points out that each discipline is different from each other's eligibility, intake year, deadline is different from the other. So the choice of school is to look at "when to apply for Co-op" instead of just reading if there is a Co-op on the first page of the course.

III. CO-op Possible extension of graduation

Waterloo has been working for more than four months to interpolate storyy terms; UBC also states that undergraduate Co-op usually extends the degree to about 4.5-5 years. This is not a single judgement of shortcomings or advantages, but rather a calculation of additional work experience with a longer course of study.

IV. The job has to compete for itself, not a job at the school.

Waterloo's process consists of job vacancies, career experience and cover matter, interviews, rankings and monitoring. Students may also seek employment on their own initiative before being authorized to do so. The choice of school should ask: how many work terms, when to start, whether there are rules for employer portal, career support and self-employment.

Table of six columns for DIY comparison of Co-op

  1. Co-op is direct entry or post-school application.
  2. Minimum/maximum work terms.
  3. Full-time, paid and minimum working hours.
  4. The first work term is usually in the first few years.
  5. Overall degree length.
  6. If there is no successful match, the school's job search and program protocol rules.
The choice of a school should not be made by asking whether there is a Co-op. The rules of the same university may be different, but they should go to your target, program, to see the official sequence.

This is a long-acting guide to DIY; The eligibility, cut-off date, tuition fees, tests, visas and professional rules should be reconfirmed back on the official page of the application year.
