Asian students can't go to first-class universities in the United States?
DI is Divacy, Equity, Inclusion, Chinese is often replaced with "Multiple, Fair, Inclusive". It was originally a campus policy used by American universities to support students from different backgrounds, including first-generation university students, low-income families, international students, ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, women, veterans, etc. But by 2026, DI had become one of the most sensitive topics in higher education in the United States. It has implications not only for school culture, but also for the policy of recruitment, the recruitment of professors, federal grants, the image of university rankings, and even the cultural war between the two parties of American politics. What the hell is that?
In a nutshell, Dei has a three-tiered meaning. On behalf of the University, students, professors and staff are expected to have more backgrounds, including race, nationality, religion, gender, socio-economic background and life experience. Equity Equal Opportunities focuses on the availability of adequate resources for students from different starting points, such as academic guidance, scholarships, psychological support, writing centres, and first-generation student support. Inclusion focuses on making students feel at school and reducing discrimination, bullying, exclusion and isolation. For many U.S. universities, DI used to be a symbol of the value of campus progress. But in recent years, it has also been criticized for political correctness, administrative expansion, and even for the fact that DI may affect the fairness of admission and appointment.
Why would Dee suddenly turn into a storm center at U.S. University? In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Harvard and UNC admissions. The Supreme Court found that the inclusion of race considerations in the recruitment process with the race-conscious missions of UNC was contrary to the principle of equal protection of the Constitution. This ruling severely limits the long-standing system of admission to American universities. After the verdict, American universities could still read students' personal stories, but not "racial identity per se" as an admission factor.
In other words, students can speak about family background, growth experience, cultural impact, social action in their application documents, but universities must assess the abilities, qualities, actions and contributions of students, rather than simply community labels. Which U.S. universities still have DI or belonging structures? ) Many schools have now reduced the direct use of the three words DI and changed it to be known as Belonging, Community, Inclusion, Student Access, Integral Equity, Civil Rights, etc. This is not simply a change of name, but rather a balance between political pressure, legal risk and school support.
For example, Harvard has changed the original Office of Equity, Division, and Belonging to Community and Campus Life, which means that top private schools are repackaging the DII language to reduce political risks. Yale has promoted the five-year plan for Belonging at Yale, the main axis of which is promotion, equity and inclusion, and has completed the five-year plan by the end of the 2024-2025 school year.
The United of California system continues to emphasize openly the need to integrate EDI into university life, as well as the need to integrate UC 10 campuses, three national laboratories and the agricultural natural resource sector. Columbia uses the language of Inclusion and Belonging and has Office of Industrial Equality to deal with complaints of discrimination, harassment, Title VI, Title VII, Tile IX, etc.
These examples illustrate one thing: DII is not completely disappearing, but is changing its name, restructuring and moving towards compliance. Also American universities, East Coast private schools, California public schools, Texas public schools, Florida public schools and Southern State universities may have a very different policy climate. In the future, in addition to ranking, it depends on school culture, state government policy, international student support, the composition of professors and students, the atmosphere of freedom of expression, employment and internship resources, whether schools are being influenced by political pressures, which will affect students' four years of learning experience.
