Speech-Language Pathology (speech Pathology, in some countries) combines anatomy, physiology, linguistics, phonetics, psychology, neuroscence and clinical practice, reaching from young children to older people.
I. What do you read mainly?
Common content includes voice and language development, speech sound developments, motor sensech disorderers, voice, swallowing, audio and linguistic communication, neural communication developments, and clinical researching and video-based practice.
Second, the most important thing is to watch the "national school system" first.
Australia can see B.A. after high school, e.g. Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) for four years and arrange simulation and external clinical internships. The path of professional practice in the United States usually requires a professional degree at the institute level; ASHA makes it clear that in order to become a speech-language patholist, it is usually necessary to get a bachelor's degree before entering a graduate program. We can't treat different countries as the same system.
III. EQUIPMENT OF STUDENTS
- I like language, psychology and human science.
- Willing to work with individual cases and families on a permanent basis
- You can watch the differences with patience.
- Interest in child development, neuro-rehabilitation, swallowing or communication technology
What's the difference with Linguistics?
Linguistics is a study of the language system itself; Speech-Language Pathology is a clinical profession that uses linguistic knowledge to make sense, dignosis, intervention and deal with swallowing, neurosis and communication disorders.
V. CONFIRMATION BEFORE APPLICATION
To confirm whether the country is a university bachelor, entry-to-practice, graduate-entry or doctoral route, and then to see the legal accreditation, CCD place, English requirement, health/background check and designation prerequisite. For international students, the ability to complete clinical internships and post-graduation professional registration is more important than the mere ranking.
VI. Common career
Hospitals、rehabilitation、schools、early intervention、aged care、disability services、community health、private practice、research。
